Figure Drawing Class at Rockledge Mansion in Occoquan

Take a figure drawing class in historic Rockledge Mansion on November 10th with instructor Kelly Campbell! Kelly has been teaching at her studio in Occoquan for over 4 years and is a portrait and mural artist. Rockledge is a gorgeous mansion built in the 1700's. It is also known for it's ghost history!

Students will be taught proportion, value, about the human figure, drapery and will be drawing from models.

When: Wednesday, November 10th from 7-9:30PM
How Much? $50 per person.
Class fee includes drawing materials (kneaded eraser, conte', charcoal, and pencil), refreshments (cappuchino, coffee and cookies), and a detailed syllabus.
RSVP no later than Oct 30th, however sign up by Oct 20th recieve $5 off your class fee!

The class is "PG 13" and the models will be partially nude and draped with fabric.

Occoquan River Festival

Hope you've been enjoying the outdoors with the summer time weather we had earlier in the week! The upcoming bad weather will hopefully hold off until after Saturday because Occoquan is having their 2nd annual River Festival this Saturday!

Occoquan River Festival~ It’s happening In Occoquan!
Sat. May 2, 8am -8pm
• Farmers’ Market: 8:00 – Noon -come support some local farmer's!

• Sidewalk Sales - Great deals from shops in town.

• Live music: live musical groups playing throughout the day…throughout the town. I personally was responsible for finding most of the music, and it's really good this year!

• Craft Demonstrations: scattered about the town.

• Horse and carriage rides (fee)

• Petting zoo which includes a pony ride (fee)

• Conversations with a Historian at the museum, and the tourist center.

• Ghost tours @ 4:30, 6:00, and 7:00 (fee)

• Taste of Occoquan (fee, at Madigan’s, 3:00 – 5:00)

*Fireworks for the Make a Wish Foundation at dusk

I will be doing a Precious Metal Clay demonstration at 2, and again at 3PM on my deck outside my studio. I will also be having a sale on jewelry and another raffle for a gift certificate!

Train Children's Mural- The Process

As a muralist here in Northern Virginia, one of the most frequent things I hear (Besides, "Oh, you're an artist? I can't even draw a stick figure!") is "Oh, it must be easy doing your job! All you do is paint all day..."
An artist's job only looks easy. We do more work than you think. :-) In this post I will discuss the process of a mural I did today for a little boys train themed room.

1. Meeting with the client to view the space, and discuss exactly what they had in mind for the mural. In this case, I had to work on a dark blue wall and the client wanted a "fun, bubbly" mural that wasn't too cartoony, and not too realistic. She had some prints already hung up that she wanted the mural to match with (below). Sometimes, in order to save the client money and me a trip, the client will email me a photo of the room and tell me the desired length for the mural.


2. Preliminary and final sketches. After talking with the client, I make 3-5 sketches of different ideas for the mural. The client then decides which one they like best, and I draw the final sketch. Most times the final is turned into a transparency and used for the actual mural.
3. The mural is turned into a reality! I used colors found in the decor. The paints I use are high quality, fast drying acrylics. I don't varnish the mural unless the client asks, but acylic itself is a sturdy, color-true paint. I also use paint markers for fine lines and details.
